All Along The San Juan River Gallery
Basketmaker rock painting at Chinle Wash, Navajo Reservation, Utah. Red paint is made from grinding red ochre (hematite) into a fine powder. Water is added along with a combination of organic binders including, blood, eggs, animal fat, saliva, and plant extracts (Slifer 2000). Bedrock metates are often seen at the base of a rock painting where the minerals were ground. |
