| There are over 3500 rock art images at Hueco Tanks State Historical Park of which about 350 are ceremonial masks similar to this image also in Cave Kiva. There are eight painted masks on the walls of Cave Kiva which is thought to be a ceremonial cave. It is accessible from the visitor center and may be visited without a guide. Brown paints are made from grinding brown ochre which is partially hydrated iron oxide (goethite). Water and binders such egg yolk, blood, animal fat and were added and the paint was applied with the fingers or brushes made of yucca fibers or animal hair. Manganese oxide may be added for a darker brown such as umber. |
