Initially called San Cayentano de Tumacacori by Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino, a Jesuit missionary, Mission San Jose de Tumacacori was established after the Pima rebellion of 1751. The first church building was finished in 1757. The present building was built by Franciscan priests between 1800 and 1822.
